I had to write a poem for class today. It was supposed to be about Where I'm From and we had to relate it to this poem writen by an Appalachian Writer. I was actually pretty impressed with what I managed to come up with, and since most of you are my family and know where I grew up :) You might enjoy this...
I am from the boondocks
From backwoods and four-wheeling
I am from the love of two people
(Strong, courageous, and
Forever long)
I am from the apple trees
The tobacco fields
Whose smell I remember
As if I had never left
I’m from eyeglasses and dreams
From Betty Crocker and Martha Stewart
I’m from the folk story tellers
And blue grass singers
From sit up straight and quiet down
I’m from two different religions
Strict and relaxed
From the grandfather I lost
To cancer
In my closet, there’s a box
Holding all my memories
All the old friends
The love of my grandma
From where I’m from
To where I will be.
